Lamb to the slaughter a short story by Roald Dahl. Is about a woman so upset with her husband she kills him and how she keeps it a secret that she did it from the detectives. I will focus on the character Mary Maloney and how her character changes as the story progresses.
In the short story”Lamb to the slaughter” by Roald Dahl, Mrs. Maloney does not premeditate her husband’s murder. Mrs. Maloney does not premeditate her husband’s murder because her love towards him is too immense, she is willing to serve him, and because of the way she reacts after she spontaneously kills her husband.
Mary Maloney phoned the police, as soon as they knew who it was, they were straight over. The police checked the house for clues, but there was none. The only evidence was the lamb. They carried on the investigation and got a statement from the man in the shop and Mary Maloney. She then lured them to eat the evidence.
In the story “Lamb to the Slaughter” by Roald Dahl, Mary Maloney is shown to have a very sinister and manipulative character. In the beginning of the story, Mary Maloney was a normal, loving and caring pregnant housewife that loved and cared for her husband, Patrick Maloney, very much.
Mary Maloney has sneakily tricked the policemen to eat the murder weapon and as they do so, she is proud to have accomplished her job. In The Lamb of the Slaughter, Mary Maloney is revealed as blameless and a meticulous criminal. In the end, she is determined to cover up her unintentional mistake and pretends like nothing has happened.
At the start, Mary is all innocent, like a lamb. She doesn't expect anything bad to happen. After Patrick tells her the news, he is standing at the window, unexpecting, like a lamb to the slaughter, because he knows nothing of what's happening. And Mary kills him with a leg of lamb.
